Evolution of humor

Where have all of the Chimpanzees gone? Chimp humor used to be a popular vehicle for laughs. Throughout my life I'm sure I've seen chimps dressed in every costume imaginable. There were chimps in diapers, as police officers, as cabaret performers, in sunglasses; chimps had the humor market cornered--especially in the world of greeting cards. It appears now that chimps have moved on from funny. Perhaps the commercials for career builder a few years back placed all of these washed up chimps into more suitable jobs for the 21st century. Monkey business is now a thing of the past. Interestingly enough, following Darwin's theory of evolution, cavemen are getting their crack at being funny. Geico has introduced us all to a small group of modern cromagnons that are getting laughs by doing what everyone else is doing; just like those chimpanzees used to do. The wit of the caveman lies however in their knowledgeable demeanor, and their consciousness of what is politically correct. Perhaps if the chimpanzees would have been able to develop the same skill we'd still be laughing at them. Such is not the case. I'm sure the spotlight on the caveman will last for a little while longer and then of course evolve into something new. The question is who will the spotlight fall upon? some have suggested that penguins are next in line. I'm not so sure about that. Penguins aren't able to don functional costumes as well as the chimpanzee or the caveman. Perhaps it will be the ancient Romans or Greeks that provide that next punchline and then continue to evolve until we realize that we're just laughing at ourselves.
