Becky and I are once again equal in age. No one is the boss of the other for another 355 days. Now that I'm 30 what I really need for my birthday is a well deserved nap. I won't get one today; maybe next year. As I hold Peter I often think of the many experiences that currently separate us. He has so much in store. By the time he has a chance to experience his 30th birthday, I'll be at 60. I marvel at his potential and mine; mostly how they are intertwined. Birthday time for me has always been fun, yet with little pomp and circumstance. I grew up with 3 schoolmates having the same birthday in my grade: Kami Hayman, Jessica Crosby, and Sarah Bell. They were so nice to include me in their birthday festivities as we went through Jr. High. I hope they are enjoying 30 like I am. My parents took us kids out to dinner for our birthdays growing up. We got to choose where to eat, and how to spend the $20 in birthday money they'd give us. I remember one year I spent that money well purchasing a Houston Rockets mini basketball, and Utah Jazz lapel pin, and the Top Gun Soundtrack on LP. How times have changed. It must have been that same year that I actually had a birthday party. I'm sure I was only 10 years old, and I wanted to watch the movie Top Gun for my birthday party. Later I found out how upset some of the parents were knowing that their children that came to my party saw such a bad show. How could a PG movie be bad I wondered. The only other time I specifically remember having friends over for a birthday was to watch the movie UHF. A Weird Al Yankovic masterpiece for a 12 or 13 year old. Now I'm getting to the point where I forget how old I am, and birthdays are more often than not a great excuse to go out to dinner with the wife. I love to reflect on years past. This last one has been quite eventful. Anytime you add a member to you family is exciting. Our family has been blessed with a great job, a beautiful comfortable home, enough to have fun and to get by, and great opportunities to serve. Now if I can just throw in consistently green grass on top of that.
