Our 24 habit has officially been replaced. We decided to try out LOST to fill the void that 24 had left; so far the body count is down about 200%--that’s a good thing. After warming up to characters Jack, Kate, and the dozens of other survivors during the first couple episodes, we’re once again making excuses to stay up late at night and watch just one more chapter. I once thought Gilligan’s Island came up with some pretty far fetched adventures, but LOST makes all of Ginger and MaryAnn’s troubles look like a walk in the park. I don’t see Gilligan lasting a day on a deserted island with wild Polar Bears, wicked smoke, and mysterious inhabitants. LOST provides something I have always seemed to long for in real life—the behind the scenes in the lives of those individuals that surround you. I love seeing why people are the way they are based on past experiences. The mysteries of this deserted island involve healing these lost individuals through a process of rebirth. Everyone gets a clean slate starting life out in the middle of nowhere. It doesn’t quite matter what one’s past has been like when everyone is simply fighting for basic survival. Even as a viewer you find yourself being very forgiving of each character’s misdeeds in their past. Would I like to see them rescued? Not really. The learning curve is far to interesting on the island.
